Members Training Class Descriptions
The following is the list of classes that can be offered at the training center. Click on any of the course names for a brief description and then you can visit the Training Class Sign-up section for the list of upcoming classes and fill out a form to notify the office of your interest in taking the class. If a class is not on the schedule you can fill out the Training Class Interest form so that we can keep track of member interest in taking certain classes.
Backflow Tester - 24 Hour
This course consists of two evening classes for three weeks. In order to complete the class you are required to take the exam at the Ohio Department of Commerce in Columbus, Ohio. There is a $100.00 fee for taking the class, and a $75.00 exam fee which will be taken on the day of the test.
Backflow Testers Re-certification - 8 Hour
This course consists of two evening classes and will be a review of the 24-hour backflow tester’s manual. A written and practical test will be given on the second night of class. There is a $100.00 fee for this course which will be taken on the first night of class.
Basic Electricity
This course will cover the basic principles of electricity as it relates to the equipment in our trade, electrical safety, and the use of electrical meters. The length of this class will be determined by the level of students. There will be no fee for this class.
Combustion
How to properly adjust and set combustion for oil and gas fired appliances. Burner maintenance. 15-20 hours.
Drive Programming and Start Up
How to properly set up and program a Variable Speed Drive. Uses and functionality of VSDs. 15-20 hours.
EPA Section 608 Universal Refrigerant Handling
This course covers the theory behind removal and installation of refrigerant gases. After completing the course work you will be required to pass a 4 section exam in order to get the universal certification. There is no fee for the class.
EPRI Industrial Rigging - 50 Hour
This course consists of two evening classes for seven weeks followed by a 100-question exam. The performance exam will be held on the following Saturday. You need to pass both the written and the performance exam in order to earn the certification. There is no fee for this class.
EPRI Valve Technician - 40 Hour
This course covers the inspection and maintenance of various types of valves used in our industry. Students must successfully complete a written and a practical exam in order to attain the certification.
EPRI Valve Technician Refresher – 12 Hour
This 12-hour refresher course will consist of review of the original material and a fifty-question exam.
EPRI Advanced Valve Technician - 32 Hour
This 32-hour course will deal with subjects like hydraulic torqueing and tightening, precision measuring, pressure seal valves and AOVs. A fifty-question exam will be given at the end of this class and students must get an 80% to get the certification.
ICRA Awareness - 8 Hour
This course consists of two evening classes for one week followed by a written test. This course teaches you how to avoid hazards while performing work in medical facilities. Salem Hospital is requiring all trades performing work in their facilities to have this training beginning in January of 2019. We expect other area facilities to follow suit. There will not be a fee for this class.
Instrumentation Level 1 – 50 Hour
This course consists of 50 hours of classroom and lab instruction dealing with the electrical and mechanical theory and instrument calibration. After completing the course you will be given a 200 question closed book exam. There is a 3.5 hour limit to complete this exam.
Instrumentation - Level 2 – 50 Hour
The Level 2 Course cannot be taken without first passing the Level 1 Course. The Level 2 Instrumentation Course consists of 50 hours of “hands on” training in which you are required to pass a performance exam.
Low Pressure Machines
An advanced refrigeration class designed to teach principles of low pressure refrigerants and how they operate in low pressure machines. Explain any precautions, and specialty techniques in servicing low pressure equipment. 20-30 hours.
Medical Gas Installer – 40 Hour
This course consists of 12 evening classes (two per week), followed by a 100-question closed book exam. The only course material required is the 2015 Edition of NFPA 99 (Health Care Facilities Code) and this will be provided. There is a $116.00 exam fee which will be taken on the first night of class.
Medical Gas Installer Recertification – 8 Hour
This course consists of two evening classes for one week, followed by a 40-question open book exam the second week. The only course material required is the 2015 Edition of NFPA 99 (Health Care Facilities Code) and this will be provided. There is a $50.00 exam fee which will be taken on the first night of class.
NCCCO Crane Signal Person - 20 Hour
This course consists of five evening classes covering various aspects of crane signaling. In order to successfully complete the course you must pass a written exam and a performance exam. There is a $75.00 fee for this class which will be taken on the first night of class.
OSHA 10
This course consists of two evening classes covering safety in the workplace. There will be a written test on the last night of class. You must pass this test to get the certification. There is no fee for this class.
OSHA 30
This course consists of six evening classes covering safety in the workplace. There will be a written test on the last night of class. You must pass this test in order to get the certification. There is no fee for this class.
Pump Alignments, Maintenance and Repair
The object of this class would be to teach proper alignment techniques using Dial Indicators and calculating soft foot. Proper maintenance of pumps such as but not limited to, strainer service, shaft seals, coupling styles, suction diffuser maintenance, and troubleshooting. 15-18 hours.
Start, Test and Balance
An advanced class regarding the set-up testing and balancing of hydronic systems and air handlers. Explain proper circuit setting and the effects of circuit setting on a building’s heat or cooling distribution. How to test and balance proper air distribution from main air handlers in buildings. (This class could be multiple weeks as there is a lot of information in this class).

Open Welding Class/ Weld Test
Classes will be held on all Saturdays from 7:00 am – 3:00 pm. An ATR will be present for testing or instruction.
